Das Sushma Koirala Memorial Hospital von Interplast Deutschland
SKM Hospital in run by Interplast Germany and SKM Trust. According to the goals
and objectives of Interplast the hhospital is specialised on plastic surgery.
A subdiscipline of medicine, which plays an important role also in countries,
where open fires and Kerosine lights in the living room are a constant threat
to the people, specially to children.
Burns often lead to scars with contractures of joints, distortion of faces or
exceeding scar formation, which is not only a cosmetic problem, but may result
in physical disability and social isolation. Here, as well as for patients with
clefts, operations, frequently a whole series of operations is the only way back
to normality.

Since years, NRA is supporting the hospital with small projects. Sometimes
books or machines are needed, in 2005 a water tank was needed to ensure the
water supply of the hospital.
Every now and then, the hospital team gets support from foreign guests,
doctors, nurses and physiotherapists, who are either integrated in the daily
routine of the hospital or support the team in conducting health camps.
Usually NRA is financing one of these camps per year. Health camps provide the
possibility to serve a population in remote villages, which otherwise is not
sufficiently reached by health services, specially by plastic surgeons. To
conduct a health cam p in rural areas in needs quite some planning in advance.
A suitable place has to be found, as far as possible in remote areas, but
still providing a minimum of infrastructure inevitable for proper operations
(think for example of energy for sterilisation of instruments, some basic
lights for operations, etc.)
|
In the next step the population has to be informed, patients have to be selected,
finding those who profit most from an operation. The close connection to the hospital
allows to transfer patients or to offer a good follow up treatment, where needed.
A health cam p usually lasts 5 days, days filled with the registration of patients,
planning and conducting of operations and interventions. These cover treatment of
chronic wounds, tropical ulcers, correction of scars, cleft operations, separation
of adnate fingers and much more.
